Your diesel truck engine requires proper maintenance
and repairs in order to ensure its long life and trouble-free performance. You
should be aware that a diesel engine is built different from a gasoline engine,
and its repair needs are also different. Your truck’s diesel engine does not
use spark plugs to ignite the fuel, instead using piston compression which causes
the air to super heat. As a result, diesel engines run at a much higher
temperature than a gasoline engine, which is why they have to be built heavier
and stronger.
Your truck diesel engine requires regular
lubrication of its cylinder walls to extend its life. Routine repairs and
maintenance are required more frequently for this engine. More frequent air
filter and fuel filter changes and more frequent oil changes at about every
3,000 miles are important for your diesel engine. You should also monitor the exhaust temperatures and engine coolant to
ensure the engine’s efficient performance. If the truck is releasing excess
smoke, or the engine power or oil pressure is visibly being reduced, it is an indicator of an engine problem.
Repairing a
Cracked Diesel Engine
If you immediately drive your diesel truck after a cold
start without properly warming the engine, it may result in engine trouble.
The engine is designed to handle uniform heat, to sustain the cast iron’s
thermal growth. However, if the thermal growth is uneven, it can put strain on
the engine, resulting in cracking of the cast iron because it is unable to
stretch. Such a crack may occur at the weakest point, which requires fixing
with sufficient strength to sustain uneven thermal growth. This may need expert
metal stitching from a reliable truck repair shop.
Plugging an
Engine Coolant Leak
You can identify the engine coolant leak easily
because it will start dripping from the source. First you should perform a
visual inspection of the engine by opening the hood. The coolant will most
likely leak from the radiator, water pump, freeze plug, or the hoses. In case
of a radiator leak, you can use a cooling system sealer which is available on
the market.
Small leaks can be sealed by application of this
sealer. Freeze plug leaks can be sealed with the sealing solution or by using some
sort of powerful and effective epoxy. If the leak has originated from the water
pump, you will have to replace the water pump. Similarly, if the hose has gone
bad and caused the leak, it will require replacement.
Fixing the
Diesel Exhaust System
If you are hearing a rattling noise in the exhaust
system of your diesel engine, it may be the result of loosening nuts and
bolts, which require tightening. You should perform a periodic check of the
manifold intake where the engine bolts to the exhaust system. There must not be
any gaps remaining between the two systems. Manifold intake leaks can result in
loss of compression and the engine will not be able to run smoothly.
The manifold exhaust must also be checked for any damage
or leakage. If there is any damage, the gasket should be replaced, or the
exhaust pipe may have to be replaced. Muffler systems also become damaged on
the road. If the muffler develops a hole, it may not be possible to patch it up,
and you will need to replace the muffler. The same is also true for the
catalytic converter on your diesel truck.
